Frequently asked questions.
Are you a psychologist?
I have a PhD in clinical and counselling psychology from the University of Toronto and have applied for registration as a psychologist in BC. Legally, I am able to provide psychological services provisionally until my registration is approved. This means that for the time being I am working under the license of another registered psychologist. This is standard procedure when seeking licensure in a new province as the registration process can take several months (for more information see the College’s website).
Do you work with all age groups?
For psychological assessment I work with children (ages 6+), adolescents, and adults. For psychotherapy I mainly work with adolescents (ages 12+) and adults.
Do you work with individual clients? Or only through contracts with organizations?
I work with both organizations via contracts and individual clients.
Do you provide in-person or virtual services?
I provide in-person, virtual and hybrid services.
When working under contract with an organization, I am able to offer in-person, virtual or hybrid services. In order to nurture relationship building and gain a better understanding of your community and lands, I strongly prefer in-person or hybrid formats. At the same time, I understand that due to a variety of limitations this is not always possible and can also provide virtual services.
When working with individual clients, I am only offering in-person services on Haida Gwaii at this time. Services provided to individual clients off Haida Gwaii will be provided virtually.
Do you offer long-term psychotherapy?
I carry a small caseload of long-term therapy clients. Please get in touch if this is something you are interested in, and keep in mind that I may be taking a waitlist.
Where are you based out of?
I live on Haida Gwaii and spend time on the territories of the Tla-o-qui-aht, Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ (Tofino and Ucluelet area), and Lək̓ʷəŋən/Songhees (Victoria) throughout the year.
How do you offer person or hybrid contracts if you live there?
While I live on Haida Gwaii, I also have connections to Tla-o-qui-aht and Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ (Tofino and Ucluelet), and Lək̓ʷəŋən/Songhees (Victoria) territories and visit throughout the year. I may also travel to to other communities outside these regions to provide in-person or hybrid services as my schedule allows. A hybrid format could look like, for example, regularly scheduled visits every 3-4 months with virtual follow-up and consultation meetings in between. I can also provide one-time visits with follow-up and consultation. I limit the number of contracts I hold at a time in order to focus on building continuity with specific communities.
Will you charge travel fees to come to my community for a contract?
It depends. If your community is: (1) on or near Haida Gwaii, or Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ, Tla-o-qui-aht, Lək̓ʷəŋən/Songhees territories; (2) is accessible by car; and (3) we can arrange services during the times I am already scheduled to be there, then probably not. If I need to drive long distances, take a plane or ferry, stay overnight, or make a special trip then there will likely be travel fees to cover the cost of transportation and accommodation. If your budget is limited and you are flexible about dates, I’m happy to work together to find creative solutions. Get in touch.
How much will this cost?
I list starting hourly rates on my Services page. I say “starting” as some services require specialized skills or tools, or come with additional responsibilities, such as forensic risk assessments. I value transparency, and will have open and upfront conversations about the cost of services as I understand your needs. Send me an email detailing what you’re looking for or schedule a free 20-min consultation call and I will give you an estimate of costs.
What do your contracts look like?
Contracts vary depending on the need and the project. Some of my contracts have focused exclusively on consultation + program development/evaluation services to support organization activities or initiatives to a variety of fields, others on providing mental health care. When working via contract to provide mental health services, I tend to focus more on providing psychological assessments, single-session and short-term therapy, and capacity building. By offering clinical consultation + supervision, consultation + program development/evaluation, and training + workshops, service providers can be supported in expanding or deepening their scope of practice. This allows for many more clients to be reached, facilitates accessible and sustainable mental health services, and reduces service provider burnout.
These contracts can involve in-person, virtual or hybrid care. In order to develop an understanding of your community and your lands, I strongly prefer in-person or hybrid. However, due to a variety of limitations, I know that this is not always possible and I can be flexible to meet your needs. A hybrid contract may look like regularly scheduled in-person visits for consultation groups, psychological assessments, and/or single-session therapy; with virtual follow-up appointments and on-going consultation in between.
A typical contract may include one, or any combination of these:
(1) maintaining a caseload of different types of assessment clients to provide detailed recommendations, treatment planning, resource referrals, and diagnoses, if necessary.
(2) regularly occurring clinical consultation/supervision and treatment planning meetings with an organization’s mental health service providers to support them in their clinical work.
(3) training and education on clinically relevant topics for service providers, often answering a specific question or need.
(4) single-session therapy and/or short-term therapy when there is a client who has immediate or specialized psychological needs that cannot be met elsewhere.
(5) program development to inform a service delivery model that incorporates the above services to effectively and efficiently meets the needs of the specific organization.
Every contract is different and is fine-tuned to meet different needs, This is just to give an example of what a contract could look like and what other organizations have found useful.
Do you accept health insurance?
Many health plans include reimbursement for psychological services. Please contact me directly for information you’ll need to submit you claim before attending your first session to ensure your plan will cover the cost. I do not direct bill insurance companies at this time.
