Clinical Consultation + Supervision
Clinical consultation and supervision can look like:
Assisting in treatment/therapy planning, offering case specific guidance and feedback, developing skills, considering psychological concerns and diagnoses, formulating a case conceptualization, debriefing, or resource referral.
While similar, clinical consultation and supervision are provided under different conditions according to the College of Health and Care Professionals of BC (formerly the College of Psychologists of BC):
Clinical Consultation.
The ethical and clinical responsibility for the client lays with the clinician/consultee, not the consultant, and the clinician/consultee is not obligated to follow the consultant’s guidance. Can be provided on an individual or group basis, as a one-time meeting or on an on-going basis, and for any service provider involved in mental health care without formal supervision agreements. **Typically what organizations are looking for, especially in inter-professional settings*

Clinical Supervision.
The supervisor is ethically and legally responsible for the client, and the clinician/supervisee is obligated to follow the supervisor’s guidance. Due to the added responsibility, the supervisor may also directly observe the clinician’s/supervisee’s clinical work, review their notes, and meet individually on a regular basis, in addition to the tasks mentioned above. Please note that I am not providing supervision to students or psychologists at this time. Supervision of other professionals such as social workers and counsellors can will be provided under supervision agreements that adhere to College’s regulations. For these reasons, clinical consultation (above) is often preferred in inter-professional settings as it meets similar needs without the added ethical and legal responsibility.
